Wine tasting is bullshit. Here's why.

The human palate is arguably the weakest of the five traditional senses. This begs an important question regarding wine tasting: is it bullshit, or is it complete and utter bullshit? -- IO9 -- HT: Dog @ Maggies

One of my favorite episode's of a great television series "Northern Exposure" was episode 12 0f Season Four. Shelly breaks one of Maurice's very expensive old bottles of wine. Eve shows her how to fix it by doctoring cheap table wine. They add a pinch of peat moss to give it "earthy overtones".

The wine market is open call for fraudsters.

I think all wine tastes awful so I can't really judge the whole pallate thing but I do know there's been fraud in wine tasting forever, and the whole deal had overtones of shyster with hints of bullcrap and an aftertaste of lying conman to me.

There are people who can actually taste the differences in coffee, wine, etc. You're born with it. You can't learn it, and it can't be taught.

The rest of us go by what Iri said.

Well, there's going to be higher and lower quality of any food - some wine is just going to be lousy, and some better. But the distinct exact differences and all that pretentious mouthfeel and the rest... no. Its all for show.

BillH -

Yeah, Bo. I, uh, was gonna say that.

Er, there's a few things I don't remember too good from back then; pshaw, blackouts are for squares. I lost whole seasons. The good thing is I am 26 years clean & sober ... although my wife sez I still act like a jerk once and a while. So there.

They always condemn that which they don't understand.

The only true wine tasting worth the time is either in the alley or the park with 3-4 other unshaven half barefoot brothers just sippin' and pissin'.

Having attended many wine tastings over the years, you gradually do learn some differences between vintages.

But, at the end of the day, it's either "good shit" or "bad shit". As we say in more polite circles, "I'll have another glass" or "I think I'll try another".

Me thinks the author doth protest too much and/or is cruelly bored.

Try wines side-by-side then the differences become quite apparent. It does not even have to be different types of wines...try several Pinot Noirs or Bordeaux or whatever.

in the end though, the best wine in the world is the wine you like best. So drink up and stay thirsty my friends.
