"Was the Renaissance something that you put on and took off like a diadem,"

Somewhere behind this astonishing Renaissance visual rhetoric was some actual young Italian woman eating a bowl of fresh cherries.  

You really have to wonder how she got through the day.  Obviously she was a goddess while standing in front of this painter all groomed and fluffy, but was she a goddess when she did the laundry, yelled at the kids, had the mother-in-law over for dinner?  Was the Renaissance something that you put on and took off like a diadem, or was it something you did even while you slept?
