The true convert ideologue does so to provide something, a vehicle, to expand his own self-image (not self-worth - image). And he needs a stage, and he needs supporting actors and props.

In this narcissist's vision is the word 'glory'. He wants glory and if the events around him won't provide the setting for his 'glory' he makes the setting. The ideology provides the vehicle and the thirst for glory provides the rest.
