"At what point shall we expect the approach of danger?

Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? No!

All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with the treasures of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not, by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is this approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It can not come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time or die by suicide." -- Abraham Lincoln

Your Say

- "...if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us."

Self-fulfilling prophecy.

Lincoln chose to destroy the Union in order to "save" it. Ironic that the first Republican President should do more to erase the Republic than any other.

Goes without saying. ;-)

Although whichever one makes things the worst will have him to thank for setting the precedent for political deceit, executive overreach and abuse of military power.

Are you trying to make a point here?

I'm not getting it, then.

It's 2013. I'm all done worrying about the Lincoln presidency beyond the fact it is the only reason there were any presidencies to follow, thanks.

We have an Imperial presidency now, and a political class as a whole that exists several foot ball fields past Marie Antoinette as far as concepts of constitutional duty are concerned. This is today, and we need to fix what is broken today in order for tomorrow to be just slightly less than the apocalypse.

Even if some of us think that point has come and gone.

Cheers.
