I'm sure she was a wonderful woman, and certainly lived with dignity through terrible physical infirmities.

Nonetheless, thousands upon thousands of pre-baby boom boys will remember her primarily for her early entry into babe-hood. When I was 11, she turned 13, and......something started happening to her Mouseka-Sweater. And I was forcibly reminded of all those sweaty secrets about 10 years later with the advent of Robert Crumb.

I realize that I should be ashamed of myself, of course, but......What can I tell ya?

Annette was a symbol giving the lie to the modern narrative of post-war America. She was a dark little Southern Italian by ethnic origin, yet she was America's Sweetheart. Americans of the time were largely decent, tolerant, and more worldly then they are now given credit for.

And yes, I too waited for those moments when Annette would twirl her pleated skirt to reveal her undies. I was five years her junior, and first saw her on TV when she was 15. I was smitten.
