My children go to Catholic school -- the kind which has a weekly rosary and nuns in habit in each classroom. It costs a fortune. It's worth it.
Before we had kids, my wife and I swore an oath that we would eat grass and wear rags before we'd let our children darken the door of a public school. No regrets.
There's a phrase that perfectly describes the practice of sending one's children to public school. That phrase is "child abuse".
My son asked me once why he didn't go to the public school around the corner from our house. My answer: "Because at that school, Jesus has to wait outside the front door, son."

If you are on good terms with your butcher, have him set aside some 'leaf lard', which is the best. You have to render it down yourself, but it is worth the day's work. I bought a few pounds of leaf lard and rendered it myself. It produces very flaky crusts and buying the stuff from the butcher was much cheaper than buying the can. Cheaper than butter, too.

I believe the old Uno's and Due's pizza in Chicago originally used lard in their ddep-dish pizza crusts. I've tried vegetable shortening and it just doesn'ty come close. Lard's the thing.
