One of the only two reasons they all become Federal legislators: plunder. For themselves, their family, their friends. They console themselves with a just-so story that they are holding the line on We the People being plundered by the other guy.
(The other reason: they don't like what you are doing, so they mean to rule you.)

To be fair (no, fair would be sequestering Maxine at Pitcarn Island) Maxine never said astronauts walked on Mars. That was Barbara Lee.

Wikipedia: She worked in a garment factory and as a telephone operator before being hired as an assistant teacher with the Head Start program at Watts in 1966. She later enrolled at Los Angeles State College (now California State University, Los Angeles), and graduated with a sociology degree in 1970.

I just cannot imagine being so unencumbered by a sense of shame, or fear of embarrassment for stating something so patently ridiculous. Yet, there she is, secure in life time employment, living off the backs of her ignorant, uninformed constituents. The country can survive old Maxine, it cannot nor will survive the growing hordes that elect someone of her ilk.
