The Intolerable Disparity in Spiritual Wealth

I can't think of a time in history when there has been such a disparity in spiritual wealth, with so many Americans living in the undignified hovels

constructed in the public education system prick by prick, others living in grand mansions not built by hands over the centuries. This should be intolerable in a democracy. The problem begins with a deeply anti-intellectual school system that, instead of nurturing the intellect, denies and extinguishes it. Afterwards, upon attaining chronological adulthood, the only task that remains is getting these ciphers to their polling places in order to ratify their masters and wait for their goody bag from the state. --One Cʘsmos: The Intolerable Disparity in Spiritual Wealth

Indeed, it's hard to kick against the pricks.

And one set of people who are spiritually stunted are those who think that what the rest of us think is a vast, strange, unfathomable and unimaginably ancient Universe is instead a small, young, constrained creation explained perfectly by "God did it". And by a book written thousands of years ago by Bronze Age herdsmen and mistranslated half a dozen times since then.

The same people appear to think that She who oversees everything from superstrings to superclusters, was here at the Beginning and will be here until the unthinkably empty absolute cold and darkness at the end of Time (or if it turns out that way, the destroying fires at the End) will break the laws She Herself wrote and enacted, if the right rituals are enacted and the right words spoken in the right order.

Ugh. Hey, guys, it isn't the Bronze Age anymore. And magic spells don't work, even if the man casting them wears a $10,000 suit instead of a robe with stars on it.

Funny thing about those Bronze Age herdsmen is they didn't believe in magic either. Obviously what they did believe, and what became the foundation of the enlightened civilization we are rapidly pissing away, gets missed by a lot of otherwise bright people.

The Truth is the same in any age, Bronze, Iron, whatever, and any place. Only someone profoundly in love with themselves, having eaten of the fruit of the tree of knowledge, fails to see that understanding is not knowledge, that, indeed, knowledge impedes understanding, must be abandoned at the moment of the leap to understanding. Our bronze age mentors were humble enough to take the leap of faith. Those unable to do this still believe, but only in themselves, and in the end, at the final dissolution, that is all they will have.
