"I wanted to make the whole thing for a change."

Creation is the whole thing, as I said. I set up my lathe again. I like the lathe. It's quiet.

I don't have to put a vise on my head to use it. It's not a rote operation, ever, even when making the same leg over again. My little son said, "Daddy is sculpting again." I adored that. I was. But more, I was thinking. I was trying. I was striving to make something, the whole thing. What to do with flame birch? -- Sippican Cottage: Something Special: The Evangeline Table

I am an idiot, and couldn't figure out how to post a comment on Sippican—I don't have a URL, I don't belong to anything online, and I'm not anonymous. So I am commenting here on this sideline.

About the Evangeline Table:

Special wood is like a particularly beautiful singing voice, exciting and exhilarating in potential; the true artisan is the composer whose skill shapes the contours of the unique incarnation that will carry that voice into the world. Still, a remarkable song is time-bound, and even if you own a recording, you can never quite own it. Your Evangeline Table has the priceless advantage of allowing the owner not only to be in the presence of the transcendent, but to actually touch it with pleasure, use it with delight, and to revel in the fact that it is there and will continue to be there at an instant’s notice, waiting patiently for your next encounter. It even gives you the gift of seeing your friends and loved ones experiencing it. A shared joy is even more delicious! All in all, a triumph.

I can’t afford it, but I screen-captured it and will print it on glossy paper and pin it to my wall with other images I love. Great art deserves its homage.

The Internet is a treasure chest!
