"After watching a documentary about the tragic story of Jonestown, "
"I was struck by the utterly unthinking way that so many people put themselves completely at the mercy of a glib and warped man, who led them to degradation and destruction. And I could not help thinking of the parallel with the way we put a glib and warped man in the White House." -- Thomas Sowell

Actually I was thinking Huey Long not Jim Jones but what do I know?
BTW I made the Huey Long comparo way before George what's his name. I have the advantage of growing up in Huey Long country.

Even though Jim Jones was obviously a raving nutcase, San Francisco liberals--including the political elites--embraced him enthusiastically.
More accurately: not 'even though' but rather 'because'.

And their politics are basically the same. But yeah Huey Long is a pretty good comparison. I thought of him back in 2008 like a lot of folks. Long could have won, too and that would have been serious disaster.
