Naturam expellas furca, tamen usque recurret...

"As I watch the entire grand circus of the Enlightenment collapsing, I can only laugh.

But at which group of clowns? The Ringmasters, who will kill everyone under the Big Top if they have to in order to keep them inside the turnstiles? The acrobats, who frantically throw pratfall after pratfall in the face of the audience in order to keep them from noticing that the kingpole is broken? Or the butchers, cooly hawking crap to the rubes in the seats even as the top begins to fall?
No. My laughter is reserved for the audience -- the jaded gentry, the schoomarms, the empty-eyed, slack-jawed food tubes who shucked out their wealth in the belief that the circus was better than reality, and that the show could go on forever.
So, Mister Bandmaster! Strike up the "Stars and Stripes Forever" for one last time. The Big Top is on fire, and nobody's going to get out before it all falls down in flames around them.
New Years' Resolution: resist the urge to say "I told you so" as the firing squad takes aim. Naturam expellas furca, tamen usque recurret... "-- B Lewis comment on Side-Lines: The American public believes itself to be free,

"Ya gotta have a gimmick!"

The Specialty always comes with a gimmick. Obviously, President Obama’s is that He’s black.
Take issue with anything President Obama did or said, and you must be some kind of racist. That’s the gimmick. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s gimmick is that she’s a frumpy middle-aged woman, who looks like she’d have trouble holding on to her husband, and the nation knows that she does have such trouble. You aren’t even allowed to discuss this in mixed company — but the fact remains, nevertheless, that that’s her gimmick. She gives bullying speeches and does a lot of hollering, but when she runs things the results turn to crap... -- House of Eratosthenes

But the Koreans owned guns and heroically defended their property and lives through force of arms, frequently using M16′s against heavily armed looters. The Racist Roots of Gun Control

Racist arms laws predate the establishment of the United States. Starting in 1751, the French Black Code required Louisiana colonists to stop any blacks, and if necessary, beat "any black carrying any potential weapon, such as a cane." If a black refused to stop on demand, and was on horseback, the colonist was authorized to "shoot to kill." -- 1993 Clayton E. Cramer

And you think Connecticut and the United States have a gun, violence, and maniac problem? Let Sultan Knish set you straight.

Imagine the Crips and the Bloods, armed to the teeth by every country from Mexico to China, fighting over the ruins of California cities, and you get some idea of the glorious Syrian civil war being fought by the Brave Syrian People, most of whom at this point are about as Syrian as the Palestinians are from Palestine, in a conflict that will determine once and for all who will be ethnically cleansing who this year.....

And we, as befits the nation that Obama described as one of the largest Muslim countries in the world, happen to be in the Sunni axis, ensconced somewhere between the fattest child-molesting members of the Saudi and Qatari royals, the most vicious Turkish and Egyptian Islamists, and the Eurocrats looking to score oil deals with the former and arms deals with the latter, and political points with their domestic population of Sunni Islamists who have the unfortunate habit of blowing things up....
There are Sunni and Shiite militia members from neighboring Lebanon and Syria. There are Pakistanis fresh from Waziristan and Libyans looking for a good brawl. There are Scud missiles and chemical weapons and broken buildings, torn corpses and roads full of refugees fleeing for their lives. There are tanks and jets and fleets. There are armies and militias, truckloads of weapons and bodies, fire behind them and death ahead of them. And they're all hurrying, running and racing to Damascus..... And then the real killing will begin. -- Sultan Knish:

As all of America is brought before the microphones blinking, crying, totally uncomprehending, we will notice one repeated phrase, a phrase so universal, so emblematic of Liberal America and its mounting catastrophes that I am proposing it become the new national motto, or rather the epitaph to be engraved on the tombstone of the Republic: “HOW COULD IT HAVE HAPPENED?” -- Our false innocence, our real guilt

The idea of angels taking care of everything for those of the superior heart

is a recurrent theme in the novels of one of the most popular liberals of all time – Charles Dickens. “The State extends its arms over society as a whole;

it covers its surface with a network of small, complicated, painstaking, uniform rules through which the most original minds and the most vigorous souls cannot clear a way to surpass the crowd; it does not break wills, but it softens them, bends them, and directs them; it rarely forces one to act, but it constantly opposes itself to one’s acting; it does not destroy, it prevents things from being born; it does not tyrannize, it hinders, compromises, enervates, extinguishes, dazes, and finally reduces each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid and industrious animals of which the government is the shepherd.” Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America (1835)

The Government Welfare Class

There are businesses in the welfare neighborhood, but they aren't really independent businesses.

The bodegas, cheap corner groceries stores lined with ads for cigarettes, or government ads against them, with malt liquor ads and posters for a local performance by a rap group, Hong Kong crooner or Latin singer, get most of their business from food stamps. The bodegas, despite their name, are usually run by Indians, Koreans, Arabs or Bangladeshis. Shaped and designed like an enormous human intestine, the hotel is the creation of Dutch designer Joep Van Lieshout. The place is one large human colon, and the finishing touch is the rear – a giant replica of an anus.
Even though there's a bit of The Purloined Letter / hide in plain sight element to this, I still think that under such conditions security would be tight.

"How we burned in the camps later"

gulag.jpg
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family?
Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” -- Aleksandr I. In the background of American films from the 1940s or ’50s

aaasanfrandp.jpg
Try Dark Passage (1947). If you can do it without crying, watch the background scenery of San Francisco in mid 20th century.
Notice how magnificent the city seems, how clean, how broad and sunlit the horizon. This is film noir but even the induced murk fails to cut off the sense of unbounded promise that exists just beyond the camera’s focus. Watch the pace of the city that appears in the background, the people walking down the street, the way they interact, the way they dress. Look at how an unspoken code of manners is guiding every person in the background. See how the man in the suit opens the door for the lady in the dress. Notice the assured masculinity of the men, the charming femininity of the women as they get off the train. -- Phone Call from a Stranger

"Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small."

In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda

was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to. -- -- Dr. Theodore Dalrymple

The Myth of Northern Innocence

The American psyche has increasingly become driven by feminine emotion rather than masculine logic.

Comforted snugly inside their fake moral cocoons, most Americans are therefore more likely to view history through the prism of guilt-projection and shaming rather than the pragmatic notion that history is essentially a power struggle over land and resources. The Intolerable Disparity in Spiritual Wealth

I can't think of a time in history when there has been such a disparity in spiritual wealth, with so many Americans living in the undignified hovels

constructed in the public education system prick by prick, others living in grand mansions not built by hands over the centuries. This should be intolerable in a democracy. The problem begins with a deeply anti-intellectual school system that, instead of nurturing the intellect, denies and extinguishes it. "We know that the Left is suicidal."

They wish the destruction of the civilization that sustains them,

or, at least, they work for the destruction while claiming to work for the foundation of a utopia. This has always been their motive and their method. Leftists regret not having had been aborted; they look forward to being euthanized, preferably by being left to starve, Schiavo-style, slowly to death by indifferent nurses in their helpless old age, dying while crying for water. -- The Knife and the Pony | John C. Buckley recalled that his British schoolmates “grabbed instinctively for the grapefruit—but one after another actually spit out the peanut butter.” No wonder, he sneered, “they needed help to win the war.” -- "Creamy & Crunchy," A History of Peanut Butter
