The Lumpenproletariat of New York

lumpenproles.jpg

THESE Daily Mail photos of New York City after the hurricane remind me of just how ugly the streets of Manhattan are,
with almost everyone dressed in drab, uninteresting clothes that rival the uniforms of Maoist China for their homogeneity and lifelessness. America is one of the most aesthetically impoverished nations in history. I wonder how many thousands of people are on medication because they are depressed by their own clothes and their ugly, hostile environments, surrounded as they are by impersonal denim, sneakers with tire treads, plastic-covered down jackets, billboards with oppressive smiles, and the austere, chilling cliffs of modern skyscrapers. -- The Thinking Housewife

I lived in the "North Country" for the "Ice Storm of '98", power was out in some areas for four weeks. Workers from Con Edison came up from NY city to help repair downed lines and replace transformers. People came out with food and coffee for the workers and thanked them for their help. The linesmen were stunned and how nice everyone was. After the hurricane New York city citizens are throwing eggs at the linesmen.

Hm. I don't agree with her. At least the street shots there look fine. Its just a fashion now to wear subdued clothing. I'm sure colors will come back another time.

Why do these America-haters compare the free choices of Americans (to dress modestly) to Communist tyranny (Mao jackets)?

To these America-haters, Americans are never free, they are always imitating some foreign, overseas, monstrous regime, usually European, but not in this case.

The comment about the drabness of NYC is absolutely right on. It is as much a matter of conciousness, "vibration"
being depressed as well as color. I lived in Manhatten for a decade and thought this was normal until I moved to a sunny {in more than just light } location. Came back to the city for business and felt like it was a gray funeral march. Couldn't wait to leave.

Potsie, You have to be from upstate NY or northern Vermont. That ice storm had people trapped in their homes by downed trees.

The tune of the times was chain saws growling interspersed with breaking tree limbs.
Ferrisburgh VT.
