Only Willing Accomplices Reach Across

ahhhnd.jpg
The important thing about staying opposed to potentially disastrous proposals is that people remember who was against it when it goes wrong.
But if on the other hand, you "reach across the aisle"€ then however noble and generous your intent, you essentially become an accomplice to the disaster. Reaching across the aisle limits your downside to about the same as your administration; but there's no real upside to it, not in this situation. That is probably what the Republican Party is going to do, and of course nobody can stop them. They are risk averse. But you can never win that way. You have to be governed by the principle of "calculated risk". -- Comment on Belmont Club » Missing the Boat

Your Say

Lesser evil will open more doors than greater evil. That's how it's done. Then conservatives congratulate themselves that due to their efforts it is not worse.

Democrats are far smarter at "compromise" that Republicans. The Rs stake out a centrist position that they think will appeal to the broadest swath of the people. The Dems stake out a position that is as far to the Left as they can get, public opinion be damned.

So at the beginning of the negotiations, the Reps are on the 50 yard line and the Dems on a goal line. Then the Dems say that they will meet the Reps halfway. That's how we get laws that are only 25 yards away from the most extreme-Left possible.

The Republicans will never stake a far-Right position as their opening gambit because they will be pilloried in the media and the Republicans can't stomach that.

Also, there is no "too far" Leftward for the Dems. Every time the Republicans give ground over that 50-yard line, all it does is move the Dems' next starting position even farther away.

It's true: Give them an inch and they will take a mile, next time.

Bush reached out to Ted Kennedy and helped pass the No Child Left Behind Act. Now you see on blogs that the act's failure is Bush's fault. No one remembers that it was Teddy's baby for several years beforehand.

I'm with you, Sensing. Let's see: repubs playing their game in their stadium by their rules. Guilty and self-conscious. Don't know who Alinsky is, won't learn from history. They shoulda stayed in the locker room. They vibe loser, big time.

No matter what the Republicans do, they are going to be hammered by the media. That is just the way it is.

The thing that they can do that will attract the smallest hammering is to let the full Clinton tax package revive on Jan 1, 2013.

They can do that by passing a bill making the Bush era tax rates permanent. The Senate will deep six it, or BO will veto it, and the 1999 tax rates will reinstate.

The people hurt the most by this will be the blue satate constituencies who will be hammered by the increased Alt Min and the 47%ers who will see their tax liabilites go back up.

Hey, he wanted higher rates, what is he complaining about.

Republicans have a problem because they are pseudo-Democrats. Scratch any Republican politician deep enough, and you will find they accept that it is correct and proper for the government to take your wealth (by force if need be), spend it on their friends, and then tell you how to live, run your business, raise your children, and use your property. Any and every Republican There are no exceptions. Every one who runs for elected office believes that. Why would anyone vote for a Republican, when the Democrats promise free goodies (paid for by your rich neighbors) without the guilt and worry?

I have never voted for a Democrat, and I never will. They are the Party of slavery then, slavery now, and slavery forever. Their field slaves today are the rich, hard-working, and virtuous. Their house slaves are, well … Harsh, I know. But what else can you say about someone who sees someone rich, considers them evil, undeserving of their ill-gotten wealth, which should be confiscated, concentrated, and spent wisely by self-chosen "enlightened" politicians to "improve" the general welfare? They would take it all, except that at some point, it becomes obvious it's just theft, a mob looting the rich neighbor and fighting over the spoils.

Well …

Very recently I had a business transaction with a man who would be considered by most a natural Democratic constituent. Born in this country, yet natively fluent in a foreign language, tattoos all over, with a modest job. Yet, as we were talking, and without my prompting, he began to express a fierce patriotism for this country. He changed his kid's school because the old one didn't make the kids say the Pledge every day, as he did growing up. When the school teachers and administrators talked to him in Spanish, he scolded them and forced them to talk only in English. He also pulled his kids out of that school because they were teaching primarily in Spanish, and he wanted better for his kids. He was proud of the contribution his father made to this country. He worked his way out of the ghetto (his words), and his family includes kids from his current and previous marriage. He is a devoted and hardworking father.

Pundits say that these men and women can never be won over to the Republicans. That is because the Republicans do not offer a real choice. With Republicans, you are still slaves, but they make you feel like dirt, and all they do is pay off their rich friends. Democrats do likewise, but they promise a pittance without guilt.

Everyone I've ever met believes that the principles espoused by the Libertarians are completely impractical, could never work, and would lead only to chaos. That's the same old serpent we've heard before, expressed about Marxism: the ideal political system in theory, but men are too stupid and greedy to make it work. Speak for yourself, I say.

I don't know where it's going to come from: a Republican renaissance, a Tea Party resurgence, or some new Party not yet born. But we still yet have the Freedom of Speech (even though the Usurper is "working on that under the radar"), and we should use it. There is a real alternative to the eternal slavery of the Democrats. It's right there, in our Constitution, the most perfect expression of civilization yet written. It is the Blessings of Liberty. Put your faith in God, not the false promises of mortal men. Grant the government limited, enumerated powers to secure some of the Rights granted to each of us by God, and do no more. Let each man and woman look to themselves, to choose their own way in this grand and glorious world and enjoy the Blessings of Liberty that accrue. Some will choose poorly and suffer, as there are no guarantees. God helps those who help themselves, your life and your rights are a gift, and you are free to throw that gift away. To help yourself, you'll have to guard your virtue, work hard, save for the future, use well the gifts that God has provided, provide for your family, and follow the Golden Rule.

John Adams said it: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." One need not be a churchgoer (or even a believer) to agree. One need only have faith (it if be called that) that if each of us lives virtuously and with vigor, it (the future and our lives) will be all right. That is our sacred promise to each other.

we must encourage and challenge our fellow citizens to turn away from that same old serpent of free goodies and slavery, paid for by theft. To put their trust once again in God and not evil men. To once again understand and believe that the uncertain Blessings of Liberty are worth far more than the certain crumbs of slavery.
