Why do gangsters hold their guns sideways?

guncastle2.jpg

You don't get exactly the right spacing between your sighting posts and you don't get that picture in exactly the right place, but you get it generally in the right place. The important thing is that you're close enough to the target and that you have enough experience to hit it without having perfect aligned and centered sights. This takes a great amount of time in training and use with the weapon before you will be any good with flash sight picture. This is a very quick way of aiming OK under time intensive periods. -- (13) Jon Davis- Quora

Your Say

There was a shooting in Lake Worth Florida, they figured it was from one of the local gangs. If I remember correctly they found 72 shell casings, two people were shot, neither fatally. Only three bullets hit what they were suppose to.
his gang was featured on the show "Gangland", so much for gangster style.

Holding it gangsta is just another example of self-imposed failure, style over substance. sort of the gun version of saggy pants.

I read that they take the spring out to fit in one more bullet, then bullets wont feed unless they turn the gun over and get gravity to do the job

I believe it’s called the Obama technique, can’t shoot straight but looks cool.

Hollyweird crap.

Well, that's just nonsense. Despite all the pretty pictures on Jon Davis' answer page, ISTM he has little experience shooting pistols.

One more thing about this. Gun control is hitting your target. Obviously, they have none.

I believe they do it because it first appeared in the movies. Somebody in the movie business thought it was cool and edgy. The gangbangers, nortoriously poor shots, adopted it. I even see white kids trying to shoot that way now.

Such is the power of entertainment. My favorite variety of it is when the shooter cocks his wrist a bit and pokes the pistol at the target with each shot. It reminds me of a chimp eating fruit.

All law abiding people should be happy that the gangbangers have adopted this shooting style.

If you have a good sight picture and sight alignment, regardless of the orientation of the weapon, you're well on your way to hitting the target. It's just that it's harder to do when the gun is sideways. It's also harder to get back on target after the first shot. So, yeah, 'bangers, keep shooting this way. I'll stay with my two-handed style, thanks.

In the old cowboy shows, sometimes the shooters would wave their guns around while shooting so that it looked like they were trying to throw the bullets out of the guns.

I tried this style of shooting at the range a while back, just to see how it worked. My accuracy was OK, although it did take a bit longer to acquire my sight picture, and follow-up shots were a bit slower as well. I could probably overcome that with pratice. However, what I didn't like was that the recoil (I was shooting a .45 APC) twisted my wrist downward, rather than rolled up. IOW, it hurt a lot more to shoot this way.

If this was an effective technique, law enforcement and the military would use it.

They actually do this, and even hold it almost upside down. When I was law clerking years ago a witness in a trial described how the defendant held the pistol. It was darn near upside down, and of course the bullets went to the left and into the ground, not into the intended victim. Using the sights is apparently unimportant.

Not very functional, but I suppose he thought he was being very stylish and with it as he did it.

I have fired a crap load of different guns in my life and have found only one I could actually hit a target with using this method.
The Australian F-1; a 9mm sub machine gun that has its magazine feed from the top of the receiver. With its offset sights designed for right handed shooters only, this lefty preferred to turn it sideways and grip the magazine for control. I haven't shot one since my time in Viet Nam, but I got pretty good with it back in my misspent youth.

Gangstas hold their gun that way, because thats the way they take it out of the box.
