On Those Unemployed College Grads

If you want a degree in Modern African Art or Gender Studies because you love that topic, fine,
but don't assume that the rest of us have an obligation to fund your life in the undoubtedly exciting worlds of Modern African Art or Gender Studies. Let your knowledge of Modern African Art or Gender Studies console and empower you as you swing that mop after hours at the Luby's, or as you lie in your parent's basement wondering how you will pay $100,000 in student loans. Don't come knocking on my door with your hand out. I've got my own kids to fund. -- The DiploMad 2.0: An Aside: On Those Unemployed College Grads

Our local state college is full of fresh-face, tattoo splattered kiddies getting their Mass Communication BS, I mean BA degree. If there was any justice they could get their degree in Facebook or Beer Pong. How did America survive when local reporters didn't have so much professional training? Thankfully we now get highly trained people on local TV standing in front of the local power utility building telling us that yesterday people inside discussed a rate hike. You really need live video of the outside of the building if you want to understand that story in all of its glory.

The first of my 5 kids is perusing universities right now for admission next year. On the topic of course selection my mantra has been...the selection of your courses is your first test of how suited you are for life after university. Choose wisely.

As for the tattoos and piercings. Why not make yourself unemployable right off the bat. It lowers the bar nicely to the point where one can always play the victim card when you inevitably get passed over for someone else.

I got a BS BA degree, but at least I had 5+ years in the Army afterwards to grow up and make myself employable in the civilian world. Accounting classes did that nicely, as did my military experience. Not every kid these days has the "luxury" of commanding a platoon of 40 people at 22 years of age, nor of pulling down a decent salary while taking job-relevant courses at night.
