« When the Democrats ask in eye-popping astonishment and contempt in what way abolishing marriage harms marriage, they are not just being stupid and evil. | Main | Hee Haw »

On the larger issue, speaking of abortion,

pulling the lever for a Democrat candidate in the voting booth is the same as pulling the lever on the trapdoor of your own gallows. It is self-excommunication.
Saying that the living offspring of a human being is not a human being is a contradiction in terms. Species do not reproduce themselves as things not themselves. Geese do not lay acorns, but goose eggs. Oak trees do not drop goslings, but acorns. -- For the Undecided Catholic Voter | John C. Wright's Journal

The whole point of the abortion debate, IMHO, is "at what point in pregnancy does that mass of cells become a human being?"

Catholics and various "Christian" fundies think a zygote 30 seconds after fertilisation is human. Others disagree.

The anti-abortion people I know see your question @Fletcher Christian as "since we can't say exactly when the zygote switches from a group of cells into a human, shouldn't we protect life from the start?"

There are only three bright lines I see, fertilization, exit from the mother, or independence. So either we tolerate the "ridiculous" situation of protecting some cells until it becomes clearly human, allow dismembering of a baby until the moment it is delivered, or allow extinguishing a baby/toddler until it can feed itself.

What argument for abortion doesn't also work in defense of slavery? It's mine so I can do with it what I wish, including killing it. What should we think of a dog breeder or pet owner that decided to drown his dog so he could retire or change jobs? Would finding someone to take his dogs be more humane? Notice the moral repulsion about drowning a dog for the convenience of the owner doesn't depend on the humanity or personhood of the dog.

I've actually heard a PETA spokeswoman defend the rights of a cockroach and remain non-committal about the life of a human fetus/baby.

You have to admit that once you can see a body with hands, feet, head, brain, etc we've probably moved beyond a clump of cells, no?
