ADMISSIONS OFFICER: Here's What They Don't Tell You About Getting Into An Ivy League School

Hint: Don't be middle class and white. {Of course, just who is going to operate and grow the nation efficiently in the future is not considered.}

Your Say

When my kids were applying to colleges, I felt like we playing poker with a guy named Doc, who was dealing and playing.

What I think we should do with the colleges is to set some minimum standard like 600 SAT and B+ average, and then let everyone who meets the standard apply for a random drawing lottery. It would be far fairer, cheaper, faster, and more honest than the current system.

P.S. I assume that like any other human activity where some bureaucrat who has no stake in the game can pass out goodies, there are corruption opportunities. Yes, I know about donating new dormitory, but that does nothing for the 35 K$/yr admissions officer's savings account. Given the situation with lots of money and emotion, I would expect an industry of fixers and bagmen. Where are they?

I like your thinking Fat Man.

I can only imagine that the committee nature of the decision at the exclusive schools makes the purchase of admission, other than through putting up the new dorm, very hard.

The problem is that the student buying his way in will still have to be damn good.

But still, I bet those bag men are out there if you look hard enough.

Last year my nephew came to me asking for advice on choosing a college. As we discussed various schools, I suggested that he list himself as "black" on the race box on the applications, because that would give him an edge. He looked at me slack-jawed and speechless for a few seconds. I told him that it was his choice. Consider Barack Obama. He calls himself black, but he could just as well call himself white since he is really a mulatto. But it's his choice, and we honor that. Tiger woods, despite outward appearances does not consider himself to be black. It's his choice. And Liz Warren is native american, dontcha know. How do you know that one of your great-great-(however many times)-great ancestors wasn't african? By Liz's rule, you can claim your black heritage.

And while you're at it, make up some kind of handicap for yourself. Your odds of admission will go *way* up.
