People speak of the onrush of the police state. I think that many do not understand how fast it comes, or how thorough it will be.
America is no longer a democracy. If you think this a rash assertion, ask yourselfwhether you have the slightest influence over policies that matter to you. Suppose that you want to end the wars, shrink the military, end affirmative action, genuinely change education, or reform a hostile and unworkable bureaucracy. Who do you vote for? Important policies are made in faceless bureaucracies immune to public influence. National politics employs a sort of political price-fixing, in which you are permitted to choose among a number on indistinguishable candidates and told that you are having an election. Central control, bad. Local control, good.
It is true, as we know from experience, that local Boss Hoggs and Mayor Bloombergs may abuse their positions, but it will not be every county and municipality that is uniformly abusive. Central government is always worse.
Screw the federales. Rally around people like Ronald Dozier, State's Attorney for McLean County, IL who is refusing to enforce what a friend of mine in IL calls the state's draconian gun laws.
And while we're not on the subject, diversity is a joke. You can paint yourself purple, stick feather up your butt, and parade buck naked down the street, but don't you dare, by god, have a different opinion. Multiculturalism is just urban camouflage for the enforced uniformity of thought.

This is a complete misunderstanding of democracy. It is in fact behaving as all great historical philosophers predict it will under universal suffrage.

Fred's is correct, as he often is. I don't know what can be done but to let things run their course. The good news is that it shouldn't be long now before things pop.
