"Vanidy" "Vanidy" All Is "Vanidy" [Bumped]

Had Enough Therapy?: Sexless at Harvard
When the Harvard Crimson first reported the story, it erred in referring to Vanidy Bailey as a female. The designation was apparently incorrect. Thus, it felt obliged to offer the following correction: An earlier version of this article used the pronoun “she” to refer to Vanidy “Van” Bailey, the newly appointed director of bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, and queer student life. In fact, Bailey prefers not to be referred to by any gendered pronoun.

Your Say

".... any gendered pronoun." [emphasis mine]

I guess this, um, being prefers to be referred to as "it"?

Yeah, I think "it" actually works in this case. I surely cannot tell, and don't really want to know, what sex, if any, this, this...whatever, really is.

Posted by: waltj at July 7, 2012 10:38 AM

I suggest s/h/it.

Posted by: Gagdad Bob at July 7, 2012 11:14 AM

Wearing a Yankees ballcap in Boston? It must have a death wish.

(Technically, Harvard is in Cambridge, but close enough)

Posted by: butch at July 7, 2012 12:06 PM

Someone should tally up Harvard's weirdos. It must be the national freak show by now. Eat your hearts out SF and LA.

Posted by: BillH at July 7, 2012 12:29 PM

Harvard hires its first "it."

"Harvard Picks First BGLTQ Director

Harvard has appointed Vanidy “Van” Bailey as the College’s first permanent director of bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, and queer student life. Bailey, the assistant director for education at the University of California, San Diego, will assume the new position on July 16."

“Assume the position?” Is that a deliberate double entendre?

Posted by: Moneyrunner at July 7, 2012 12:29 PM

I wonder if it has spawned.

Posted by: Jewel at July 7, 2012 12:31 PM

How about P.O.I.G. person of indeterminate gender.
Drop the "o" if it suits.

Perhaps Ms. Bailey could request that Harvard's English Department publish, for all to see and use, a list of non-gendered pronouns that are deemed "acceptable" for use when referring to Ms. Bailey.

My first thought was not to its gender, but the fact it is a Negro. Because: Racist. I am so ashamed.

Posted by: Velociman at July 7, 2012 2:02 PM

For someone who doesn't want anyone to talk about her vajayjay, she draws an awful amount of attention to it by not saying.

Harvard, huh? Not only are these people a sorry excuse for an elite, not only are they not smart enough to decide how we should live, they aren't stable or well-balanced enough to inspire anything but helpless laughter. Time to purge the academy.

Rg, that's a perfect reference! Well done!

Credentialed, not competent.

The definition of America's self-appointed elite.

Sorry, "Van," but basic grammar trumps your identity and self-esteem. We have pronouns for a reason. Get over your Harvard self.

Looks like Saturday Night Live's "Pat", with the sad fact that it's not meant to be comedy.

Offend this thing, and you will have hell to pay on campus. That's what it is there for- to be offended, and punish those who offend it. Great job.

On second thought, she reminds me of a large vat of amorphous, pre-sexual goo.

Posted by: Gagdad Bob at July 8, 2012 10:28 AM

I'm not sure how you do it, Bob, but that image just became way more disturbing.

It may be pre-sexual, but I'd guess it isn't non-sexual. Unfortunately.

Vanidy needs to clue her "wife" in to this pronoun thing:

While Quisha may be the fashion stylist by day, she tells me that Vanidy also “knows what looks amazing on her.”

Posted by: B Moe at July 8, 2012 4:24 PM

One other thing--wearing a ball cap with the colors of the team replaced by black is imbecilic.

Posted by: Mike James at July 9, 2012 8:00 AM

Maybe we can refer to "it" as "What the hell?"

Posted by: MWTexas at July 9, 2012 8:53 AM

In the bad old days if you wanted to step out of the closet the first requirement was that you were good at it, like Paul Lind. This is not good advertising for being different, it's just punishment.

Time to use the Henry VIII solution on the Universities.

Posted by: Fat Man at July 9, 2012 11:12 AM

So, what exactly, useful goods or services does Van provide? Seems like people determined to live non-traditional lifestyles have always found their niches, or if not determined enough, gave up and joined the boobosie with the rest of us. That ain't such a bad thing, most people are relieved to have gotten through that youthful foolishness, having found things of tru value to sustain them for the long haul.

Oh, I see. Useful idiot. Well then, Van's ticket and place in line for the camps is already prepared.

Posted by: John A. Fleming at July 9, 2012 12:10 PM

I also opt for calling "it" a "Pat."

Posted by: Don Rodrigo at July 9, 2012 12:11 PM

Oh, and this sorry spectacle is coming soon to the U.S. Armed Forces, which having surrendered, will be unable to resist it. All Commanders will be require to have and fill a LBGTQ&F billet.

Just as all Russian Armed Forces had the political commissar.

Van IT y

Posted by: Uncle Jefe at July 9, 2012 3:05 PM

I have personally nothing except best wishes for Van, who is due all the respect as a fellow child of God.

My beef is that this is the stupid stuff that happens when you call out classes of citizens as being "special" and deserving of our protection. It's corrupting. They start demanding (!) you treat them special.

I'll be hanged if I will. This is the United States of America, where no one is special. We bow and scrape to nobody. There are no indispensable persons in our country. There is no one with pre-ordained qualities and a prior claim on Us. In the United States, we rise and fall on the merit of our works, not our God-given talents and the wealth of our progenitors.

So, act like a pretentious j-a, be prepared to be scorned like one. "It" it is then.

It would be wise to remember Gandalf's wisdom:
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Posted by: John A. Fleming at July 9, 2012 5:01 PM

I saw a description about a video featuring Vanidy on YouTube, the description actually uses the pronoun "their"
as in "Vanidy got their degree at so and so school"

Yes. Their, like split personalities.
