I suppose I should deplore your joke about shooting James Cameron, but since he's said that he wants Avatar to inspire terrorism, well, it's hard for me to get too worked up about your joke.

The movies probably will stink. But Cameron should make the call. More poor movies will harm nothing.
Similarly, Lucas went too far with 6 Star Wars films. I expect more Avatars will bring nothing worthwhile. Even the first was all 3D and graphics, there was no story.
And how many Alien sequels were there?

Avatar was a great movie, a cinematic milestone. Except for the plot, which was so stupid it still makes my head hurt to think about it.
Aliens was a masterpiece. But after Aliensesses 128 or wherever they left off, they had pretty much milked that cow raw. Better to quit while you're winning and go out on top.

Could get dicey when the SWAT guys show up on Cosplay Night at a sci-fi con, though...

SteveS, I'm with you. Alien and Aliens were completely different movies; the first horror, the second an action flick. The others should never have been made.
This appears to be a Hollywood habit; milk an idea for as many sequels as possible, taking no risks. Two more examples I can think of are Highlander and its sequels and Starship Troopers and its sequels. Meanwhile, movies that would be brilliant (Footfall, Lucifer's Hammer, the Cities in Flight series, Ringworld...) don't get a look-in.
