"CERN may or may not have found the Higgs boson. This is not a repeat from 2013"

Physics Community Afire With Rumors of Higgs Boson Discovery The Higgs boson is critical to the Standard Model, because interacting with the Higgs is what gives all the other particles their mass. Not finding it would severely undermine our current understanding of the universe. [HT: Dustbury]

Your Say

And they go to Woit for comment? Geez, I guess politics counts for more than actual expertise in physics. Which is pretty much what I would expect from Wired.

Aw shit, no Higgs means we have to fall back on GOD as the adhesive for the universe.

Stephen Hawking now needs a new thesis.

Peccable - As I understand it, the Higgs field (whose force carrier is the Higgs boson) is thought to be what gives matter mass, and not finding it would mean that our current theories about the Universe are wrong - which has nothing to with the evident fact that the Universe has laws in the first place, and also nothing to do with where those laws come from, or (to borrow Hawking's phrase) "who breathes fire into the equations".
