Welcome, Obama Suckers, to The Dollar Store Economy

Over the past few years, arguably no retail faction has experienced as much success as dollar stores.
Dollar General has just about doubled its number of locations in the past decade. There are now more than 9,800 Dollar General stores nationwide, making it the country’s largest retailer by location count. Dollar Tree opened its 4,000th store in 2010, after hitting the 3,000 mark four years ago. Family Dollar, meanwhile, has about 7,000 locations in North America, and expects to add 450 to 500 more this fiscal year. -- In Down U.S. Economy, Dollar Stores Increase in Popularity, Number of Outlets Across Country

Oh, yeah, recovery is just around the corner.

Your Say

I like shopping at the dollar store because I don't have to dress up like when I go to Wal Mart.

Same thing happened last depression, Woolworth's made a mint by being cheap.

Wait until the Euro collapse causes the dollar collapse, we'll be at the dollar store with wheelbarrows full of hope and change.

Somewhere around August, when the economy takes another recess, we'll see the 1%'ers in line at a dollar store.

I was in a dollar store not long ago and they were selling 16oz container of milk for natch, $1.
That is $8 a gallon. There are from time to time good deals in these stores, but frequently items are overpriced for the quantity purchased, or are of an inferior nature.

Jim - Of course you're right. But sometimes you have to settle for "inferior" when the alternative is "none". And, of course, avoid the overpriced items. It's called shopping around - which in today's circumstances is beginning to be rediscovered.

We have them over here in the UK, too. Usually, the standard price is £1. And the number of them is increasing fast.

Peccable, ain't gonna happen. The 1%ers are very good at keeping their lifestyle while others are suffering. Particularly bankers.
