Museum Muddle

Everybody is hushed, like in church or in a library.
People whisper, if they speak at all. Nobody laughs. Nobody talks to strangers. As on NYC sidewalks, eye contact is forbidden.It's a reverent but unfriendly atmosphere. Nobody looks as if they are having fun, all so somber and serious. When I have my earphones on (I enjoy the audio guides) and end up making some wisecrack comment to Mrs. BD, she frowns and says I am talking too loud. A few times I have made comments to people who werelooking at what I was, and they look at me as if I had produced a loud fart in church. -- Thoughts about a museum visit - Maggie's Farm

Your Say

A few years back, I had the good luck to get three tickets to the Van Gogh exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum. It was one of the more awful experiences I paid for. We were given the little recorder tourguides, for which we paid another dollar, and then herded like cattle through chutes. It was densely packed, the pictures, almost all of them miniatures, were few and far between. It was overbooked, overheated and just plain misery. It's a more satisfying experience to look at Van Gogh's work on tumblr than dealing with the museum.

That's true. And it's a manifestation of deep cultural illness.
