"When I see Republicans or establishment conservatives uttering some vapid and dangerous idiocy...."

... such as Condoleezza Rice still blandly insisting, as the answer to every criticism of her policy,
that "everyone wants freedom," I no longer think, "This cannot last, this must be repudiated." Now I think, "She and others like her will continue saying such things until our society crashes." -- Small moves away from liberalism are not going to turn around the society as a whole

Your Say

You know how you can tell that "everyone wants freedom" is baloney? Look and see how few people do anything to get freedom. Look at the Middle East, how many centuries would you and your family sit in place as your world turned to desert and one marauding horde after another swept through and ordered you around? Even the Europeans were willing to risk it all to come to the New World, and they had agriculture and effective governments. The Middle Easterners and the Africans stay in place and battle over the crumbs. Where is the Arabic Thomas Jefferson and George Washington? Where is the African Edmund Burke? Why is Africa's high-tech export t-shirts and Arab's export what the Europeans pump from the ground?

Many many cultures on the earth wouldn't cross the street to get their freedom so they don't try for more than buying or stealing something shiny from the successful cultures. Their cultures aren't accidentally backward or centuries behind The West, they simply haven't wanted what we have enough to do what is required. You'll know they are sick and tired of being sick and tired when they stop doing what makes anyone sick and tired. It's not genetic it is cultural. Any child from any place can be raised with our ways and succeed. Take any kid from here and raise him as the losers live and he will fail. You can't do it for them. They know there are different ways to live and they choose to live their own way and maybe buy some of our stuff.

Well, we seem to have a huge bunch in this country that don't want freedom. They want the government dole and sell themselves into slavery for the pittance.

Speaking of Burke--It is ordained in the eternal constitution of things that men of intemperate minds cannot be free; their passions forge their fetters.

It is both ironic and instructive that the the liberty which we voluntarily surrender to the state seems in proportion to the degree in which we like to export it.

Great comments, all. It really is beginning to look like only a small minority of people truly want freedom, including right here in the U.S. The majority either want to be taken care of, or else they just want to steal other peoples' stuff.

rickl - Sure. And part of that majority has offices in Wall Street. They do their stealing legally, too.

"Stealing legally" is a good definition of what "progressives" do.
