Someone asked me on Twitter, “why don’t they just report the truth” and I thought, “because they have given themselves wholly over to a lie, and they fear the truth.

We have reached a remarkable era of photojournalism, as demonstrated by the once-noble Washington Post
-- one where a half million people can march, the headlines can call it "thousands" and the pictures show you none of it. .... Having built up the lie for so long that it's become their foundation, they know they cannot withstand an assault by the truth. So they have become truth-phobics, our mainstream media. They can't tell you the truth about anything, anymore -- they can only do whatever it takes to sustain the narratives they've constructed. --Pro-Lifers and the Truth-Phobic Press « The Anchoress

Oh, but it does go so much deeper than mere self-deception. Diana Tumminia, in her article "When Prophecy Never Fails" writes about what happens when deeply-held beliefs are shaken by seemingly incontrovertable facts.

Some people take the new knowledge and learn from it. The true believers, however, manage to twist reality and their belief system around each other until they come up with a new, stronger, belief.

This is why only the strongest-minded liberals ever challenge what they believe.

One of the last times I read the Communist... er... the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was the day after a pro-life march in downtown Pgh. Tens of thousands of people marched, but the only photo was of a group of about a dozen counter-protestors on a street corner. That was about the same time (early 1990s) they referred to the membership of the U.S. Supreme Court as "four conservatives" and "five moderates". That was all I could take.
