"I look at the latest Clancy on the bookshelf, hardbound with that odd paper cover, and I think "

"€œno way that thing's ever worth a shit, in that or any condition."
Looks all garish and tacky on the shelf, too. And one of the most confounding things in my universe -- aside from the odd ideas people have about loading a dishwasher --€“ is that paper cover. What's the protocol with that? Do you leave it on when you're reading? Take it off? -- The Other Two Hundred Forty-Nine « The Dipso Chronicles

Your Say

If you're industrious, you take those tacky paper covers and laminate them and then tape them with stringy tape. Like a library book. Like you MEANT to check out that tacky book.

Brodart.

I used to buy paperbacks because they were cheaper, but since I discovered Brodart, I go out of my way to buy hardcovers whenever possible. It's easy and fun, and my books look spiffy.

I like the adjustable covers, with perforations on the paper insert. Use an X-acto knife to trim the excess plastic, and you can make the cover fit the book jacket precisely. A pack of 100 costs about $40, and I have them in three different sizes that will handle almost any book.

Now Jewel, I know you're all multi-lingual and stuff, but if you're going to use foreign words, at least let me know what language it is. I've been googling "What country says library" for hours, and I still can't figure out what it means.

I just take the paper covers off and toss them, they're supposed to protect the book, but I take good care of my books.

Those who buy and sell books place enormous value on the dust covers. I own an autographed first edition of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove (the one with the typo in it, making it a first-first edition), which includes the dust cover. It is just as valuable for having the dust cover as it is for being autographed.

Yeah but I don't collect books, I read them. I don't buy a book that I won't want to read more than once and keep.
