THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN: A man with his head up his ass so deep and so long he needs a snorkel just to breatheYet another argument for culling the herd of the New York Times with a flamethrower:
"Imagine where we’d be today if on the morning of 9/12 Bush had announced (as some of us advocated) a “Patriot Tax” of $1 per gallon of gas to pay for education, infrastructure and government research, to help finance our wars and to slash our dependence on Middle East oil." -- The Whole Truth and Nothing But - NYTimes.com

Or he could have simply announced on 9/12 that he had nuked Mecca. Then seized and annexed the Saudi oil fields. That would have been much easier and cheaper in the long run.

Or, what if we had started drilling/exploring for oil in North America? What if we start getting serious about that now?
Conversely, what if we created a tax on "kept men"? I'm just askin'.

Wait a minute. Don't my property taxes already pay for eductation? Don't my per-gallon gas taxes already pay for upkeep of the transportation infrastructure? Don't companies already use the dollars I purchase their products with to fund research? Any my substantial income taxes already pay for defense? What is this nitwit Friedman talking about?
Want to reduce dependence on foreign oil? Drill, baby, drill!

He didn't mention the Jetsons and the Flintstones even once.
