Surprise! Today is "National Grandparents Day!"

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America,
by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2011, as National Grandparents Day. I call upon all Americans to take the time to honor their own grandparents and those in their community. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth. Your Say

Far be it from me to cut Obama a break, but my desk calendar says "Patriot Day/Grandparents Day", so it's apparently been around for a while.

I'm no BO fan, but hasn't Sept. 11 been observed as Grandparents' Day for many years?

He's declaring this for Kenya. In so doing he's hoping hey won't deport all his illegal relatives for a change.

It is my friend's birthday today. She seldom celebrated it after 2001, but a few years ago, decided it was okay to continue to mark the day she was born. That wasn't a tragedy, afterall. And she's blessed us all for more than 60 years and counting.

The 9/11 date is a coincidence:

From Wikipedia:

"The U.S.'s National Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day, in September.[citation needed] In 2010, it falls on September 12, and in 2011 on September 11 (also the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorism attacks)."

We are missing the point. Is there another President who would agree to do this on so solemn a date? Surely there is some day or another which falls on December 7 as well (was that before we had a day for everyone?), or Martin Luther King Day (isn't that Groundhog Day?), yet we never hear Presidential proclamations said over them. All this proves is that one President in every 43 will shit on your grave.

Perhaps National Grandparents Day should be moved to a less emotionally charged date - say December 7th or July 4th for example.

September 11 - it's not just an anniversary; it's one more chance to push a reelection campaign talking point:

"As a country, we understand our welfare is determined by that of all Americans, and it is our responsibility to provide for our grandparents as they have for us. We must keep Social Security strong and viable, while preserving it for future generations. We must strengthen Medicare by making common-sense changes that encourage high-quality care and address wasteful spending. After a lifetime of contributions to our Nation and its economy, seniors have earned this support."

Really, I'm actually surprised not to see a line in there about if we don't save Medicare then our beloved grandparents will fall like the twin towers did, and for the same reasons. I guess he held back out of respect for the date.

Again, I'm no BO fan, but you people who are slamming him for this have your heads so far up your asses you wouldn't know a real issue vs. an insignificant issue if it landed in your laps. This talk is all right up Conspiracy Alley - come on, we have enough real material to nail him on.

Two identical posts in a row - I think I smell a concern troll. (changing capitalization doesn't count, bozo)

Gee... its the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 Massacre and he is commemorating National Grandparent Day.

When a ancient City-State was conquered, the old temple was razed, the old 'god' was destroyed and a new temple was raised with the new 'god' of the conqueror put in its place.

Smart thinking, Barry.

Hey, No BO Fan:

You lazy slag. Don't you people take any pride in your work?

Posted by: ahem at September 11, 2011 7:03 PM

I'm not a fan of BO, either. Deodorant and good hygiene. That I can support, but we should never, ever support uncontrolled BO, understandable as it is on so solemn a day as National Grandparents Day.
