Whistling Past the Graveyard

For some time now, residents of some US cities
have noted occasional incidents of seemingly random, racially motivated violence in which young Black males are involved. The hot weather and bad economy seem to be combining to generate a small but possibly significant uptick this year. The national media are doing their best to avoid looking too closely at this disturbing phenomenon, and perhaps for good reason. -- American Tinderbox | Via Meadia

Your Say

As the great Kathy Shaidle says "America wishes it had picked its own damn cotton".

Meade describes the vile society which has resulted from the "Great Society," the "New Frontier" and the "New Deal," but can't bring himself to call for fundamental change.

I'm glad I'm home sick. The essay was a fine one and it even caused me to respond with a lengthy and boring effort of my own. Thank you, Gerard. As always, you provide provocative writing and links.

but can't bring himself to call for fundamental change.

He doesn't need to call for fundamental change.
Change will come calling all on it's own; armed, deadly and very pissed with what the country has become.

Yes Peccable, you are correct.

There are many pissed off people in this country because of what it has become.

And they are armed and dangerous because they no longer give a damn.

Got Guns?

A concealed carry/handgun permit is ridiculously easy to get, cost $100-200. You can get a Rock Island Armory 1911 (think WWII Colt 45) for under $400. If you can point your finger you can be accurate with a 1911 pistol and nothing says "stop" like a 45 slug.

Fear no man.

A CCP is all well and good if you can carry when you need it. I live in Florida and have my CCP - and it is like a security blanket. I am like Scott M., as long as I am here at home -- where I almost constantly carry. I will draw, and I will fire, if ever threatened by some mob of thugs.....

But...here's the rub and what makes me unsettled... This kind of "flash mob" crappola is taking place in places like Philly, and Wisconsin - not where I live and hang out. I had to fly to Philly on biz recently. I don't check my bags but instead carry on the plane. So my security blanket (SW-442 38 Special) got left at home. And I am in the downtown city "bare." Plus, what kind of CC laws do those places even have, for their citizens? If I drove up there instead of flew, chances are I'd be a felon for carrying, in half the states I passed through.

My niece lives in Manhattan. From what I understand, she could not get a CCP even if she wanted to. So what do people like HER do about the risk of "Flash mobs."

Something has to give.....this country is in trouble....

Someone will please correct me. I do not recall these flash-mob stories coming out of a true concealed carry state.

Criminals are stupid, and mobs are stupider. But the recognize risk and opportunity perfectly well. In Nevada, where I live, we are concealed carry. Flash-mobs here organize their attacks, such as they are, on 7-11's, where they know for a fact are not armed, and not Korean grocers.

I admit to having no sympathy for entire groups of people who will not defend themselves. The scum are doing the fearful an unintended favor in holding up the mirror.

Wait until the first flash posses start showing up, groups of people called together through social networking to counter the flash mobs.

James Wilson, I lived in FL when it adopted it's "shall issue" laws and tourists started getting car jacked. The thugs knew the only way they could be certain of now picking an unarmed victim was to follow a tourist's rental car, with obvious rental car license plate, from the gun-free airports.

My state has a "castle doctrine". The law presumes a homeowner is lawful when shooting an intruder unless proven otherwise. If someone is illegally in your home, thou shall be smited.
