Blake: The Ancient of Days

ancientofdays2.jpg

I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
when he established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
when he gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

Job.38 [1-7]
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:
"Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements -- surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone,
when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Isa.45 [6-7, 12, 18, 21-23]

I am the LORD, and there is no other.
I form light and create darkness.
I make weal and create woe.
I am the LORD, who does all these things.
I made the earth, and created man upon it;
My hands stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.
For thus sayeth the LORD, who created the heavens, who formed the earth and made it:
I am the LORD, and there is no other.
There is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior;
Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return:
To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

The Proverbs passage was the OT reading today. The sermon text was James 1:2-8:

   Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,
for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

   If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
