Obama as a "Catcher"

"Soft pornography" never quite struck me as so powerful a corrupting force,
as a novel which exalts the worst kind of self-pitying adolescent narcissism, and holds it up as an ideal, through adulthood to a senile old age.
The book has had a remarkable and, to my mind, infernal influence on society, owing in part to its author's literary skill in the manipulation of colloquial language, in part to the emotional and even hormonal power in that peculiar explosion of sex and ego that is adolescent narcissism itself. The proof is in the pudding, and the fact that Catcher in the Rye went on to inspire at least three celebrity assassins (Mark David Chapman, John Hinckley Jr., and Robert John Bardo), along with who knows how many "little league" psychos and suicides, speaks to its real power.
Indeed, one cannot look through the list of President Obama's strange and demented policy czars without spotting so many Holden Caulfields, nor escape their ever-presence among the talking heads of MSNBC. And in watching the president's State of the Union address this week, I had the distinct impression of a man whose big-government vision rests less in Marxism than in the faux-naïf of "a catcher in the rye." -- davidwarrenonline.com - NEWSPAPER COLUMNS

Your Say

Having gotten hold of what is probably a new word for them--narcissism--right wingers are having a field day applying it to Obama. As a rule, right-wingers tend to be dismissive of things Freudian, but here he comes in handy. And now can be added that tome rivaling even The Communist Manifesto for pure evil, Catcher in the Rye. To think Salinger worked out how to destroy our society almost sixty years ago--what an evil genius!

"As a rule, right-wingers tend to be dismissive of..."

That's the kind of broad thinking that makes liberals our intellectual, social, and political betters. Thank goodness we have them to tell us new and exciting words (like narcissism) to use against them.

When I read the title I immediately thought of a different kind of catcher. Whereupon it occurred to me that Obama is a catcher pretending to be a pitcher, which explains so much.

Gerard,

David Warren has introduced what may be the ultimate cultural apostasy here - and the fact that he's probably dead on may be adduced by the instantaneous pissy assault in the comment above.

I would imagine that anybody our age has suspected, and may even have argued, the same connections, but I doubt anybody has or will put it as succinctly as Warren has.

This link and the Brubeck piece are gonna drive your trollship through the roof, you sly dog.

I so love the jerks of the knee and the smokers of Obama. They have such limited and predictable intellectual reach. One would have thought liberals and progressives would have discovered "narcissism" at some point in the two Clinton administrations, but no. Even that didn't clue or cure them. They'll go down sucking.

I am also pleased that my play on "catcher" has not gone unappreciated.

At the risk of feeding the trolls, one doesn't need to embrace freudian psychotherapy to draw parallels with greek mythology.

Barry Knister trots out the standard projective slash at the right - that we're all illiterate - or racist or sexist or greedy or just plain ol' trashy hicks.

That impresses fellow Obama-slurpers, but political independents are looking for substance these days. You know, Barry, stuff that stands up to fact-checking and rational analysis?

Knock the dried Obama dung out of your pipe, buffoon. If you're so smug about narcissism, name one demonstrated Obama trait that is inconsistent with that diagnosis.

Perhaps the whole narcissism discussion is just a little too close to home for the dhimmis and socialists among us? They all seem mighty touchy about it.

I never read 'Catcher' and I am glad I did not. As an emotionally turmoiled adolescent (i.e., normal) I did not need reinforcement of emotional turmoil. What I needed was a kick in the rear, a 'grow up, it isn't all about you' message. Reading the obits on Salinger, and the reviews of 'Catcher' it seems to me that the novel was semi-autobiograghical, and that Salinger never did emotionally grow up, he remained an angry adolescent all his long life

Thankfully, I wasted my teenage years reading C.S. Forester, Tolkien, and Wodehouse. Playing AD&D and wargames. And actually interacting with humans

You suck. Some very good points, but written in a disrespectful tone and so your observations lose shine. Look up the definition of 'respect' and take a few moments to reflect on the meaning. You are a strong writer, but you need some class. Thanks.

Mags,

Gee, that's classy. Maybe if I add the word "suck" to my vocabulary...

Anyhow, thanks for the tip, Teach.

Respect? You mean like respect the murderous child molester that wrote to Koran? Just because someone commits words to written form does not automatically command respect, dipshit.

I likes me my AmericanDigest complete with disrespect, snark, sniping, calling-out, trash talk and general aggravated classlessness.

Someone wanders in here and doesn't like the dark bitter coffee of reality, feel free to leave, lurk or yell back. But don't expect Gerard's regulars to love you for it, cupcake. We have God's country to defend here, and some of us are willing to use strong words and large caliber weapons to get it done.

"Catcher in the Rye" is just a damn good book.

Like Hemingway's Paris, ("A Moveable Feast") there is never any ending to "Catcher in the Rye," and each person who has ever lived it, lives it different from any other.

"Catcher in the Rye" is always worth it, and you receive return for whatever you bring to it.

I first thought it was a book of rebellion and rage. And then, I found a book of loss, and the bittersweet struggle to grow up.
Now, I read "Catcher in the Rye" because I am in awe of Salinger's ability to write authentic colloguial conversation.

Thanks for the great link to a great article that I probably would not have noticed otherwise.
