Even better - what if instead of axes, pokers, etc......they were armed? And even if guns were outlawed, and no more ammo was available...the people had hoarded. And the MOTHERS and the WIVES of police operatives never would know whether this house, this night, would be the night Sonny boy got ambushed and shot in the head.
As Hitler's SS advanced east, on the heels of the Werhmact, they would come across small Jewish villages. They would march them out, line them up and shoot them, into ditches those people had been forced to dig. These people were all completely unarmed. I sometimes wonder if --....If in each and every village of say 1500 people, 150 Colt 45 pistols with a couple hundred rounds of ammo for each and 100 M-1 rifles with ammo - had been distributed to the men of the village - with some basic instruction - a few weeks ahead of the Nazi advance.....multiply times DOZENS of villages/towns in Poland on east into the heart of the Soviet Union.......one can only dream.
But of course, leftists like Stalin can not risk having an armed civilian populace, now can they? And the Leftist bastards naturally want to disarm us in our own country. For our own good of course.
May God Bless and Preserve perhaps the most important of the first ten amendments of all....

Interesting that this quote comes from the footnotes of the first Gulag Archipelago, yet it is one of the most often cited. It is almost as though Solzhenitsyn had a brilliant afterthought and inserted it when he finished writing the chapter on how one goes into the gulags, that is, into the Sewage System. The whole footnote is actually worth quoting, because it talks about the buyer's remorse that comes from throwing yourself completely into the 'revolution' only to find out that you are mere fodder for burning in the ongoing, never-ending journey towards perfection....REAL communism, which will be achieved after 15 or 20 more five-year plans have been accomplished.
