Yes we were thinner. Newsreels show that. But the movies tell us little.

You might as well look at stage productions today and say the actors are like the audience.

Before 1960 movies seldom included actual public scenes. Nearly everything was done using extras on a constructed set.

The extras were a self selected group to begin with. Then the casting director usually filtered out the heavy, tall, short, very young or old or ugly. The idea was that those were distractions.
