My fellow Americans, ask yourself this one question...

... are you better off than you were just two years ago?

How Much "Change"€ Is Enough? « Half-Baked Sourdough

George Bush has been in office for 7½ years. The first six the economy was fine. In spite of the mid-2000 Clinton recession, it was even resilient enough to rebound after 9/11. A little over one year ago:

1. Consumer confidence stood at a 2½ year high;
2. Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3. The unemployment rate was 4.5%.
4. The Dow Jones hit a record high -€”14,000
5. Americans were buying new cars, stoking the economy, taking cruises, vacationing overseas, living large!

But Americans wanted change! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes -- €”we got CHANGE all right. In the past year:

1. Consumer confidence has plummeted;
2. Gasoline is now over $3.75 a gallon, and it had hit well over $4 a gallon;
3. Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase);
4. Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION dollars, with prices still dropping;
5. 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
6. As I write, the Dow is probing another low: $2.5 TRILLION dollars have evaporated from Americans€™ stocks, bonds and mutual funds investment portfolios.

Yes, in 2006, America voted for change -- and we sure got it! Remember, the President has no control over any of these issues - only Congress. And what has Congress done in the last two years? Absolutely nothing! They certainly haven't€™ improved the situation. They'€™ve made it much worse.

I am trying to email this article to myself so I can forward it to friends and it is not allowing that to happen...making a comment like I am trying to do something wrong.
Excellent post and adds great clarity to the current situation. I want to share it. Can you help me?

So whynell is McCain going around telling people on the stump that he knows they are worse off now than they were four years ago?

I remember posting (too lazy to look it up) that Fred Thompson blew the primaries because he really did want to be president but really did not want to campaign for it. Seems to me McCain is the same way. He just does not have the fire in his belly to campaign in a way that will win.

I don't mean he needs to go negative any more than he has. In fact, going negative for McCain has done him no good.

McCain needs to run against the Democrat Congress and point out that a President Obama would be mere putty in the hands of Reid and Pelosi. If you want those two to run (then ruin) the country, then put Obama in office. Look what R&P have done since 2006, then see whether you want four more years of that, amplified.

But - will. not. happen. Why? because McCain wants to win the race without, you know, actually running it.

My initial reaction to Donald's comment is that McCain has been taking great pains to distance himself from Bush, even if it means denying that under Bush things were pretty darn good, as illustrated from the graph.

The Democrats and mainstream media have been so successful in painting such a black mark on the Bush years (Endless war, Shredding the Constitution, Idiot white rich man's son, Torture torture torture, War for oil, Bush = Hitler, Bush knew about 9/11, Halliburton Halliburton Halliburton, etc. etc.).

So McCain has decided to dismiss any connection with the Bush administration, for better or for worse.

Mainstream Media has done a great job with blame shifting. Showing that the economics have been to blame on Republicans, but these stats show otherwise. The liberals that have taken over Congress have implemented the mantra that the illuminati politicians truly believe in. It's interesting that the MSM doesn't promote show more stats like this.
