WordService 2.7's Convert: Blog Formatting Aid for Mac Users

openquote.jpgDon't you hate it when tidy little quotation marks from something you've clipped don't display as "..." but as “...” ?

Yes, that. One of life's little P. I. T. A. for bloggers.

And don't you hate it, even more, when you find yourself going back to strip and replace all those marks by hand? I mean, if you've undertaken a detailed fisking of some fool who's quotes aren't like yours (Anti-American quotes, most likely.), stripping them out can be tedious. And, no, TextEdit doesn't get them all, either. As you well know.

Well, there's a free "Service" menu item from Devon Technologies that fixes all those quotes automatically. And does a lot more besides. It's a small add-on for Safari (and other similar browsers-- not Firefox) that performs a host of automated tasks.

What sorts of tasks? Well...

Reformat, Remove line attachments /endings /links /multiple spaces /multiple feeds /quotes, Trim line beginnings /line endings /lines, Sort lines ascending/descending, Shift left /right, Initial caps of words /sentences, All caps and lowercase, Mac/Windows /Unix line endings, Rotate 13, Straight /Smart Quotes, Encode /Decode tabs, Insert date /date and time /time /contents of path, Speak native /German text, Statistics.

All you have to do is select the text of your post -- Apple-A -- then bring up the conversion action you want to apply on the Services menu and let her rip.

WordService 2.7 is a free download found at Devon Technologies -- Needful Things: Services.

Download and install. You'll be glad you did. And when you do, give the linklove back. closequote.jpg

Not to say that the tool is no good, but the use of "" is incorrect. Those are double primes. The “” style is correct for quotation marks and should be marked up using the appropriate HTML entities. But pretty much only web standardistas will give a crap.

You are correct that it's, strictly speaking, incorrect... still the problem is with the display. Someday we will have a real web standard, but that day is not yet.
