Family Matters

100thbirthdaysmoke.jpg

My uncle has seen fit to have his 100th birthday this week. I'll be escorting my mother to the celebrations. As a result, posting will be light and/or archival.

The picture reminds me of my dear grandmother Zelma.
She only lived to 92 however. If it hadn't been for the four pack a day Pall Mall habit she might have stretched that out a bit.

Safe travels and many happy returns to your uncle. His life has spanned so much change. It would be interesting to get his take on today's world. Perhaps diminished cognition has spared him too much awareness. For me, it's the glass of wine at the end of the day that softens reality.

If I remember correctly, your Mother is 94 - and your Uncle is turning 100?

My God, Gerard, you must be planning to live forever. Best wishes to you and your family on this great day.

The picture is absolutely priceless.

My Mother lived until 94 and smoked right up to the day she died. She quit right after she retired in her mid-60s, then when she turned 80, she decided that life was way too short to deny herself something that gave her so much pleasure. She told me that once you reach 80 you have to take your pleasures where you find them. She was fond of giving her uptight holier-than-thou doctor a hard time by pointing out that she had never been sick a day in her life, seeing him only once a year for a flu shot, while he, at half her age had already had two heart attacks.
