You Can't Make This Shit Up, But Science Can!

Hot Climate Could Shut Down Plate Tectonics

ScienceDaily (May 13, 2008) - A new study of possible links between climate and geophysics on Earth and similar planets finds that prolonged heating of the atmosphere can shut down plate tectonics and cause a planet's crust to become locked in place.
Forget about that big quake in San Francisco! Party on!

China just lost 10k people in a show of force by the earth's tectonic plates.

Like AlGore's blizzardy NY symposium, these global warmening doomsayers have some serious timing issues.

Yeah, I think the Chinese would confirm that it hasn't happened yet. Death toll will probably go a lot higher than 10k.

Look at it from Algore's perspective, timing issues notwithstanding. Global warming is the perfect scam. You can blame practically any natural disaster on it,
it's hard as hell to prove otherwise, the worst effects are supposed to be far off in the future, and you make tons of money from it in the meantime for almost no investment. What a deal!

Sacred Trust, you sound smarter when you comment on things you've read.

Wow, you guys are really smart! Especially when you manage to ignore the very SECOND paragraph of the linked article....

""The heat required goes far beyond anything we expect from human-induced climate change, but things like volcanic activity and changes in the sun's luminosity could lead to this level of heating," said lead author Adrian Lenardic, associate professor of Earth science at Rice University. "Our goal was to establish an upper limit of naturally generated climate variation beyond which the entire solid planet would respond.""

But, don't let facts get in the way of a good Junior High School snark-fest.

Gee whiz, Tim, you don't say? Thanks for pointing out the obvious. You must be a riot in a comedy club, especially when you stand up.

"The heat required goes far beyond anything we expect from human-induced climate change, but things like volcanic activity and changes in the sun's luminosity could lead to this level of heating," said lead author Adrian Lenardic, associate professor of Earth science at Rice University."

So, like, there was this volcano in Chile, and then there was this earthquake in China, and. . .

Oh, wait:
"Lenardic said the research team wanted to better understand the differences between the Earth and Venus"

Oh, it's the Venutians that are all gonna die, or like, maybe they're all dead already, locked between the tectonic plates by global warming.

Either way Al Gore is disappointed.
He hearts these headlines.

Sacred Trust:

Apart from the fact that the original article is talking about heating far more extreme than most global advocates believe will ever happen; plate tectonics is the reason why a) Earth has a breathable atmosphere and b) there is any dry land on Earth.

Without vulcanism and mountain-building (both dependent on plate tectonics) all Earth's carbon would soon be locked up in carbonate rocks and carbon-rich fossils like coal, and the forces of erosion would long since have worn away the continents completely. Sure, earthquakes are unfortunate, but the lack of them would be worse.

Also, even if plate tectonics stopped right now, the effects would take tens of millions of years - minimum - to make themselves felt. This article was nothing to do with the current AGW controversy.

Except for one thing. It has been pointed out that there are three attractors in Earth's climate and hydrospheric/atmospheric system; Snowball Earth, a situation much like today's and a Venus-style hothouse. Nobody knows how much forcing it would take to send Earth towards one of the other, rather less attractive to us, attractors. Snowball Earth is temporary, but on a geological timescale. Hothouse Earth is permanent.

Thank you for the science lesson. Now can I just enjoy the daily humor I receive from people who get all twisted-up over the little things? I get the distinct feeling that Alan, tim and fletcher have all sorts of things in common.
