It is the ultimate in coolness to say, for example, "I drove across the Bay to get here," and be able to have the statement taken literally. This is the case even if the motor vehicle in question looks idiotic.
This is also the reason I don't have much respect for Humvee purchasers. All that cash, and it won't drive on or under water? Bah.
