It's one thing to go to Mars. It's more than two more things to live there. The best day on Mars is worse than the worse day anywhere on Earth. Sounds way cool. I'm going.

Cool video, yes, but the whole project is a "Bridge Too Far and Too Soon."

Sending gigantic ships full of lots of people and lots of stuff, repeatedly, after only some cursory visits by a few much smaller craft is the height of folly and hubris.

The only "good" thing about this plan is that cool launch technology will be a byproduct. So, when Musk wakes up from this feverish dream, he will retrench, and come up with more sober, scaled-back concepts.

Understand that Musk is thinking this way because he wants to "save Humanity." The problem with that conceit is that it inflates the size and scope of a project based on an exaggerated sense of urgency. Like the other Silicon Valley Titans, Musk is steeped in progressive notions about humanity "killing the planet," which is not happening.

Roanoke Colony was a bridge too far, too soon.

New stuff gets done by people who focus completely on getting stuff done, and ignore the terrifying fact that it hasn't been done, and don't yet know how to do it.

Cortez burned his boats, and founded an empire.

Mars will have its Roanokes.
