American Woman

American woman, said get away...
Don't come hangin' around my door
Don't wanna see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be.

"Even before Neil Young, there were America-bashing Canuckleheads making an extravagant living by attacking the country that makes their frivolous lives possible. American Woman, by the Guess Who, expresses sentiments that are still widely shared by our leftist friends to the north, who, in a recent poll, ranked the United States as the most dangerous country on earth" - One Cosmos: The Greatest Liberal Rock Songs

Of COURSE the 'Nucks rank us as Evil Bad #1; they know full well our tanks won't be crossing their border anytime soon.

Its easy to hate a benign neighbor because it makes you feel tough without the expense of actually having to be tough.

Not all Canadians think that. Just too many of them do.

The rest of us greatly appreciate what the US has done for the world.

Many Canadians had a rather doubtful attitude to the US long before the country became liberal in the American sense of the word. After all, the country was actually founded, in its modern form, by people who a) did not want to speak English (the French Canadians), and rather later, b) people who did not want to be Americans (the Loyalists), on the grounds that American society was indeed too liberal.

Plus, you guys kept threatening to invade us, sometimes even actually doing so. Think of the War of 1812 (yes, you invaded us too; it wasn't one-sided), the Fenian raids, the 54/40 or Fight campaign slogan.

That stuff about fundamental frivolity has got to stop. Remember the Hostage Crisis. We may be critical, often unreasonably so, but that doesn't mean we won't come through for you in a crunch.
