News at Slant: How It's Made

How to set up a camera and choose a lens to slant an interview. A Hollywood director's first blog post examines Charlie Gibson and ABC News Camera Trickery .

"Now take a look at Sarah Palin's interview below. Funny how all the shots are no wider than the one on the left. There's a reason for this. While it's true that Governor Palin is of less stature than Mr. Gibson, the deliberate choice of the camera's height, framing and the use of telephoto lenses all serve to make Mr. Gibson look overpowering and Governor Palin the weak prey. This is common shooting technique we use to make a villain appear more ominous. How intuitive of ABC News to correctly portray themselves."

He compares this treatment to how ABC shot the Gibson/Obama interview. At which point you might suspect there's a conspiracy afoot....

Gibson does a masterful job of portraying a total prick. The good news is 1) Maybe many other people will have noticed that about Gibson too, and 2) This will have been good practice for Palin in her debate with Biden, the Senate's Prick of all Pricks.

Nothing surprises me anymore. I'm afraid Charlie and ABC did Palin and McCain a favor by doing their best to discredit her and and make her appear insignificant. Now she knows what to expect, so do her advisors. I'm sure they'll be ready next time.
