Stand

Come, my friends,
’Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
- Alfred Lord Tennyson's Ulysses

Words to inspire those of us of a certain age.
There may be snow on the roof, but there's still fire in the belly.

I accept that at some moment, some place not so far down the road from here, we will find ourselves in that moment at the end of waiting when an anonymous and wholly superfluous whisper or shout of "here they come" will signal the beginning of decision.

One way or another.

Stand. Indeed.

When I first read this poem in college, it baffled me; I couldn't figure out what the hell it was about.

Now I am nearing the end of my fifth decade, and it makes more sense to me with every passing year. In another twenty years, I think I'll understand it completely.
