A twenty-three year old soldier was being brought home in a funeral cortege from the Ohio air base thirty miles away.
This is an excerpt from the letter sent to the local school administration from the Commander of the 55th Honors Detachment of Wayne County, Ohio.
" . . . we were invited to take part in the return of Damon to Loudonville . . The enitre route from Mansfield had well wishers with flags and saluting as we passed. This show of Patriotism was very moving until we came into Loudonville.
Your students must be commended for the patriotism they displayed. There were 7 members of the 55th in my van and you must believe me when I tell you the sight of the students with all those flags and their orderly conduct left no one in the van with dry eyes.
It was said many times, that it was the most moving display that anyone of them had witnessed.
The seven veterans were from WWII to the the current conflict."
He finished with the definition of 'veteran':
A veteran is someone who at one point in their live has written a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount up to and including my life . .

The people in this small town get it. We know the price of freedom. That this great land and these brave troops are currently led by this dithering poseur . . . is frankly - horrifying.

Posted by: M*A at October 29, 2009 7:55 AMThis is for my Father who served aboard the USS Arizona. He was at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7th 1941. Lost many friends that day. For the next 4 years his home was aboard the USS St. Louis. Torpedoed four times, kamikaze attacked twice. Was at Midway and all the other major Pacific sea operations. Retired from the Navey and never talked about the war was too hurtful, made him cry. He passed away a few years ago. His 7 children miss he a lot. He was just 17 when WWII started. Thanks for the song -- means a lot to me. I served in the Air Force during Vietnam. One brother served in the Army and one served in the Navy. If you enjoy your freedoms--Thank A Vet..

After 22 yrs in the USMC/USMCR and another 21 in the State Guard I know they are there for each other. When a Fallen Hero comes home be there to welcome them. When a Unit comes back from deployment, be there to welcome them. If Viet Nam taught us nothing else it is that we must support our troops regardless of our politics. Pray for our troops and their families.
