It is little understood that Adam Smith was not an "economist". The man who discovered the invisible hand was a moral philosopher. Hayek was a moral philosopher. "Road", and "Fatal Conceit", are moral philosophy through and through. The unchangeable peculiarities of individual humans, set free to self-organize within a sphere of abstract rules of conduct, is the invisible hand.

"Man cannot foresee his own advance."

"Powerful instinctual and rationalistic impulses rebel against the learned rules and institutions that capitalism requires. It is not so much emotion and reason that conflict, but instincts and learned rules. The socialist mind can conceive of order only as the result of deliberate arrangement. ”

"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design. The astonishing fact revealed by economics and biology is that order generated without design can far outstrip plans men consciously contrive."

"Our civilization depends, not only for its origins but also for its preservation, on an extended order of human cooperation known as capitalism. The extended order resulted not from human design or intention but spontaneously: it arose from unintentionally conforming to certain traditional and largely moral practices, many of which men tend to dislike, whose significance they usually fail to understand, whose validity they cannot prove, which have nonetheless fairly rapidly spread by means of the increase of population and wealth of those groups that happened to follow them."

"The extended order, capitalism, is transcendent–that which far surpasses the reach of our understanding, wishes and purposes, and sense of perception. It incorporates and generates knowledge which no individual brain and no single organization could posses or invent. To extend human cooperation beyond the limits of human awareness requires being governed not by shared purposes, but abstract rules of conduct."

I think this quote from C.S. Lewis appeared somewhere on your site recently, Gerard. It makes a good companion for the quote from Hayek.

(Copied shamelessly from goodreads.com)

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Control. It all comes down to control.

"There is simply no room left for 'freedom from the tyranny of government' since city dwellers depend on it for food, power, water, transportation, protection, and welfare.
Your right to live where you want, with companions of your choosing, under laws to which you agree, died in the eighteenth century ...
Only a miracle or a disaster could restore it." W. S. Burroughs — Cities of the Red Night
