Something Wonderful: "Look, Yo-Yo Ma, No Hands!"

Leonard Bernstein "conducting."

"Computer engineers are working on facial control for those who are disabled. I somehow doubt that they will ever get to match the precision and control Bernstein has with the Vienna Philharmonic."

Perfection, and Bernstein's the one that got them there. Now he barely has to move a muscle.

Thirty five years or so ago, a friend of mine gave me a 'word of the day'. "Aspectibund, what does it mean?" Couldn't say. He won that one. Went home and caught 'Bernstein's Beethoven' on WTTW (pbs,Chicago). All of the symphonies, done by the Vienna Phil., Bernstein conducting. A piece every week.

Limousine liberal or not, Lenny had the chops. He wanted kids to hear Music, and by G-d, my parents agreed. So he was my friend, voice, stick, face, and all. Pretty much since I was a baby.

I liked the story of the conductor who showed up for rehearsal, opened his music, looked at the score for a few seconds, closed it, and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, you know it, I know it, see you on Saturday" (for the concert). That's confidence (and they apparently did perform very well, too).

Lenny was a great musician, but politically, he was like a hormone-besotted teenager. Inchoate feelings, and nothing else. The best I can say is that I've never heard of anyone taking his political "thoughts" seriously.
