All that and it still tastes like dirt.
There's a metaphor in that someplace...

This happens. My father was a Professor who wrote a history of the Franco-American "Acadians" in Maine. It was a history of the common people, and it got a lot of attention in the 1980s. Dad wrote about this in his memoirs:

"The biggest thrill was yet to come. One day the mail brought a letter written in pencil in block letters on a lined pad of paper. It looked like the writing my children brought home from first or second grade. The letter writer pointed out a mistake he had found in [my book], and he was right. He ended his letter by saying that this was the first letter he had ever written and he was helped in it by his literacy volunteer. His handwritten letter was accompanied by a typed one by that literacy volunteer explaining that the letter writer had been given [my book] because he was an Acadian in his seventies. It was the first book he had ever read. He liked it so much that he bought a copy, the first book he ever bought. Plus, his letter to me was the first letter he had ever written."

It's hard to overstate what the gift of reading and writing means to people.

Borepatch,

How awesome that must have been for your father!

Was drinking a cheaper Pendleton scotch when I opened your site.

Thanks for the video

Turns out Pendleton is a drinkable American whiskey!

This commercial stands next to the Coke ad and has 100X more heart. I liked the Cola ad, but am tired of diversity as a toxin call of the left. Then again, I'm tired of everything politicians give us.

Here's mud in yer eye!

Casey,

I b'lieve you intended "tocsin," but "toxin" and "the left" in the same sentence is rarely in error.
