Fabulous! More heart-breaking, alarming, and awakening than Picasso's Guernica.

Truth telling in a painting.

Sorry, I don't quite get it. But then "patriotic"
art, like jingo, slogan and chant never really resonated with me.

Perhaps some of the elite could explain. Really, is this a representation of unwitting, yet willing soldiers in Wilson's World Social Engineering war (to end all wars!) of choice?
Perhaps a celebration of the 1917 Selective Service Act (we select, you serve)?

Perhaps a celebration of the Lusitania deception?

Somehow I can't imagine that it supports the (upper)peaceful scene depicted.

In any manner whatsoever.

I think I understand ito's overarching point, but I think he's missing the point here. I see the picture and am reminded of A.E. Housman's words:

These, in the day when heaven was falling,

The hour when earth's foundations fled,

Followed their mercenary calling

And took their wages and are dead.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;

They stood, and earth's foundations stay;

What God abandoned, these defended,

And saved the sum of things for pay.

@ itor. No to all your questions.
Not necessarily mercenaries either, rather guardians, madmen of mercy for the innocent. And, as attributed to Orwell -- People sleep peacefully at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
