My group was always in Queens and I usually rang the bell at a shopping center in Lake Success, Long Island. I'll never forget how many people said that their fathers had told them to always remember the Salvation Army because they gave coffee and doughnuts to those on the front lines during WWII. The Red Cross, on the other hand, was selling doughnuts at sites well away from the fighting.
