Just to quibble, I'm not a fan of Yo-Yo Ma's phrasing...

But it's J.S. Bach, the music of the spheres themselves. Johann von Goethe, on first hearing the music of Bach in 1818, wrote "I said to myself, it is as if the eternal harmony were conversing within itself, as it may have done in the bosom of God just before the creation of the world. So likewise did it move in my inmost soul, and it seemed as if I neither possessed nor needed ears, nor any other sense - least of all, the eyes."

Phew. Try that one on for awhile. For all you rock fans, let me share something else: the more you learn about music, the greater will be your understanding that EVERY SINGLE NOTE in this piece is intentional - and perfect.

Imagine an entire string quartet, sketched out by one instrument alone, like an early Picasso pencil drawing with every line delivered by a genius.

You'll note how the fey and narcissistic Lennie Bernstein tried to steal the show by quite unnecessary prolixity. But it was good for the context to glimpse JFK, Jacquie AND Ike in the audience. Don't time fly! However, JSB renders time irrelevant, thank God.
