"If Obama had a newspaper it would look just like this."

If you didn't already have enough contempt for the freeloading lifers at the New York Times, this will fill you up. Make you laugh too.

The wooden wagon wheel gild meets reality. And. never. saw. it. coming. So much for the self appointed filters being in the know.

Well, as one who was a believer in, and beneficiary of, the Blue Model, I can empathize with their angst. When you've put in 25 years or more thinking that at the end of the road there would be a gold watch and nice pension, and that model fails, it is a shock. You would think, being in the news business, they could have read the tea leaves. But they haven't - denial in one of its many forms. The fact that print media is becoming a dinosaur just hasn't quite hit them yet. I am particularly amazed by the guy who is ready to strike because he is going to lose $300,000 ($15,000/year or $1250/month) over twenty years of retirement. As one who saw my pension plan dumped into the maws of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC) because my union could not understand that concessions or Chapter 11 were the alternatives, I can tell you that when there is NO MORE MONEY the courts will not say someone has to pay what was promised. Many municipal employees are finding that out as the roll of cities filing for bankruptcy begins to grow. All in all, it's better to take a 15-20% cut and keep something rather than hope for miracles and end up with nada. For those approaching their 60s these are truly difficult times. The pension promises, including Social Security, are going up in smoke. Their "golden years" are not going to be as golden as they hoped.

We all made a mistake when we accepted the idea of promised pensions, and even worse, COLAs. No insurance company could write annuities with those kinds of promises. Why did our CEOs, Boards of Directors, and politicians think they could construct Ponzi schemes for the masses? Denial of basic financial truths is what it is. And now the truth is asserting itself. Lord have mercy on us all.

Loved the last line: "Without us the Times is just white space." With you, it lines the bottom of bird cages.

Let them celebrate this with Kool-Aid. Let them drink it all down to the very bottom of the vat.

They did this because they could get a benefit now, and when the bills came due? Well, they figured they'd be already dead and some sucker would be stuck with the mess.

True, that. Will we learn the lesson?
